IRC Channel (a suggestion by Erik Bikerland)

Forums:

Why don't we make an IRC channel so that conversations won't be limited to just posting and waiting for a reply? There's the Beast's Lair IRC channel, at #beastslair, server irc.irchighway.net. However, because of the people, I'm planning on leaving them. Call me a coward, but I'm just scared of the people. So let's make the channel as low-key as possible, just like this site.

I do know how to run IRC channels, so all we need are agreements on what server is going to be used, what the name of the channel will be, who will be the ops, if the channel is invite-only, if the channel can only be restricted to the ops and voiced people, and things like that.

I'll wait for any replies.

P.S.: I am sure that the IRC channel will become a reality!

P.P.S.: If anyone's interested in contacting me privately, my name's Strange_R on the Beast's Lair IRC channel. That's all I can give for now. Don't want to risk my e-mail address.

I don't really visit the BL channel so I have no idea what goes on there, assuming its used for general TM-chat, There's really no point to be competing with the BL channel, since fragmenting the already small (?) community isn't a good thing, so making the channel invite only or something to that effect probably makes more sense.

There needs to be some people to be on most of the time. I'm past my IRC days (barely hang out in any channels anymore), but I'd be happy to help out.

Also, I vote for IRCHighway :)

P.S. On a side note, not sure if I should be happy or sad this site is considered "low-key" haha

P.S.S. I added a contact user feature, so as long as you have an account on this site, users will be able to get in touch with you through a contact form :)

And here I am. Also, I spelled my name wrong on my earlier posts. It was supposed to be Birkeland! Oh well.

No, Type Moon is rarely discussed there. I quote...

6 25 14:10:54 <BewareTheCheese> It happens once in a while.
6 25 14:11:15 <BewareTheCheese> You might call it *sunglasses* once in a Type Moon.

Okay, so invite-only or password protected, at irc.irchighway.net. Is #tsuki-kan alright? Also, my new IRC name will be e_birkeland.

Those who want to join the IRC channel, post here, or contact me beforehand, and tell me your IRC nick. Any more suggestions and comments, well, post here, or contact me.

Received your email, we can just discuss on BBS.

Anyways, how about making it simple and just call it #tsuki . As for server, I still like IRCHighway, one less server for me to register in >.>

Fine with me. Also, IRCHighWay is now the server for the Tsuki-kan IRC channel. Fortunately, not one uses #tsuki there. What's your IRC nick going to be?

So there we go, #tsuki is created. Invite only. My new username's zx81. Just query me when you've arrived. Also, what time are you online? We could miss each other.

I love the idea of an IRC channel for this site. :D I'll hop on when I get a chance, and I'll probably just keep the name MPham.

Here's my thoughts on everything that's been brought up in this thread:

  1. The choice of servers sounds fine.
  2. I've never been to Beast Lair's IRC channel, but it doesn't surprise me that it's drifted off topic or gotten kind of crazy. I think keeping our channel invite only is probably a smart thing. We should also strive to keep a handle on it, keep it focused.
  3. We should try to agree upon a time to meet up every week in the IRC channel, otherwise we will probably miss each other a lot. I also recommend we pick a "topic of the week" related to TYPE-MOON in some way so that we have something community-related to chat about each time. We could pick the topic for the next time we meet before we go, that way everyone would have a week to think about it and contribute something meaningful to the conversation. What do you guys think?
  4. I also consider this site to be low key, but in no way do I think that diminishes it. It's an excellent source of information about TYPE-MOON, it's beautifully organized and presented, and who cares if only a few people decide to involve themselves in the community? Isn't smaller better when it comes to these things anyway?

Those are my two cents. I look forward to chatting with you guys.

I propose the "topic of the week" to be...

In the beginning: The high school days of Nasu and Takeuchi

And there seemed to be a netsplit on IRCHighWay, so I can't do anything about #tsuki at this moment.

Haha hmm I can't say I have a set time when I'm on... you guys can decide on when to meet, and if I'm free I'll do my best to drop by, or something. Also, a conversation between 2-3 people will probably not be THAT interesting, so I recommend getting more people to join before doing that weekly topic idea.

Who else do you all know who is into TYPE-MOON? : /

And I disagree: I think a conversation with 2-3 people could be interesting, but we shouldn't hold any crazy expectations. We meet up, chat for a little while until we run out of things to talk about, and then we split. If that whole process takes ten minutes, then so be it.

I made a basic test, and invite only works! Also made it a secret channel as well. Therefore, let it be known that today, July the 14th, 2011, at 6:57, is the birth of this channel!

P.S.: Didn't make the registration of the channel the birthday. Channel wan't finished at that time. Now it is, so there.

Looking forward to our first discussion.

As for a time, I live in California, so I'm on Pacific time. I work retail, so my schedule is kind of funky, but Saturday or Sunday night after 10:00 would be good for me.

Invite only isn't permanent on IRCHighWay. That means one person must be online all day, or make a bot do it, or from what I heard on the #help channel, set restricted and secureops. I only did secureops, fearing that restricted may unintentionally ban some people. So, any person here who can handle 24/7 internet? To watch over, or for the bot.

There's a service on IRCHighWay called Botserv. Hooray! And I invited a friend over there. Her name's WhiteMage. She's an op now. I forgot to say this, but I talked with MPHam on the 14th, and I made him an admin accidentally. No problem with him being an admin, so I left everything as is.

Accidentally? You make it sound like I'm some kind of ruffian!

Thought it'd be a good idea just to drop by and say hi to everyone. I'll also be joining the irc-channel and I hope we'll have a good time.

Welcome aboard. :)

Btw MPham I accidentally deleted your above post while removing spams... I was able to restore the reply but it's not under "Anonymous"... sorry!

It's gone. I plan not to reopen it until a considerable amount of members joins this community. It's no use trying to maintain an IRC channel that no-one frequents, and if they do, in irregular times.
